📖 How This Works

This calculator estimates power consumption and costs for data center facilities based on industry-standard metrics.

Key Formulas

Total Power (MW) = IT Load × PUE Annual Energy (MWh) = Total Power × 8,760 hours × Utilization % Annual Cost ($) = Annual Energy (kWh) × Rate Carbon (tons CO₂) = Annual Energy (MWh) × Grid Intensity ÷ 2000

PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) measures total facility power divided by IT equipment power. A PUE of 1.0 would mean 100% of power goes to computing; typical values range from 1.2 (excellent) to 2.0+ (inefficient).

Grid carbon intensity varies significantly by region. Grids with more renewables (California, Pacific Northwest) have lower intensities than coal-heavy regions.
