Note: Hornsdale Power Reserve originally used Tesla Powerpacks; upgraded with Megapack expansion. Tesla operates hundreds of additional smaller Megapack installations globally.
Deployment & Revenue Growth
Note: Revenue growth (27%) trailed deployment growth (49%) due to declining Megapack average selling prices. Gross margins improved to 29.8%.
Virtual Power Plants
Tesla's Virtual Power Plant (VPP) aggregates thousands of home Powerwalls into a distributed grid resource. During peak demand events, enrolled households discharge stored solar energy to the grid, collectively acting as a power plant. In July 2025, California VPPs delivered over 535 MW to the grid, with Powerwalls providing nearly 500 MW, enough to power roughly half of San Francisco.
๐บ๐ธ California: PG&E / SCE / DSGS
The largest Tesla VPP programs. PG&E territory alone has ~50,000 eligible Powerwalls. Programs pay homeowners to discharge during grid emergencies. Southern California Edison and the DSGS (Demand Side Grid Support) programs also active.
~500 MW delivered๐บ๐ธ Texas: GVEC & ERCOT
Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative offers up to $220/kW enrollment incentive plus annual payments. Helps support ERCOT grid during Texas heat waves and winter storms.
Growing enrollment๐บ๐ธ Sacramento: SMUD
SMUD's My Energy Optimizer Partner+ program offers $4,320 per Powerwall enrollment incentive (capped at $8,000/household) for new installations enrolled within 90 days of PTO.
$4,320/Powerwall incentiveTotal Payouts
Tesla has paid Powerwall owners over $10 million through VPP programs as of May 2025. Homeowners earn money by allowing their batteries to support the grid during critical events.
$10M+ paid to ownersHow VPPs work: When grid operators signal high demand (typically hot summer afternoons or cold winter evenings), Tesla's software simultaneously commands thousands of enrolled Powerwalls to discharge stored solar energy to the grid. Each home contributes 5โ13 kW, but aggregated across thousands of homes, the result is a power plant that can rival a natural gas peaker. No fuel, no emissions, no construction permits.
Supercharger Network
Tesla's Supercharger network is energy infrastructure, not just an EV amenity. With NACS (North American Charging Standard) adopted by nearly every major automaker, Tesla's network is becoming the backbone of EV charging across the continent. The network grew 18% in 2025 alone.
NACS adoption: Ford, GM, Rivian, BMW, Mercedes, Hyundai, Stellantis, and others have adopted Tesla's NACS connector standard. This gives non-Tesla EVs access to over 2/3 of US Supercharger locations. Tesla earns revenue from every kWh dispensed, turning infrastructure investment into a recurring revenue stream. Tesla added over 3,800 net new stalls in 2025, finishing the year with 8,182 stations and 77,682 connectors globally (17% and 19% YoY growth).
Autobidder: AI Grid Trading
Tesla Autobidder: Autonomous Energy Trading
Autobidder is Tesla's AI-powered energy trading platform that automatically optimizes the buying and selling of electricity from battery storage assets in real-time. It operates across hundreds of sites worldwide, at every scale, from aggregated residential Powerwalls to 100+ MW utility-scale Megapack installations.
The software uses machine learning to predict energy prices, grid demand, and renewable generation patterns, then autonomously dispatches stored energy to maximize economic returns. For utilities, this means battery assets can participate in wholesale energy markets, frequency regulation, capacity markets, and ancillary services, all without human intervention.
- Real-time wholesale market bidding
- Frequency regulation & ancillary services
- Price forecasting with machine learning
- Works at residential through utility scale
- Integrates with Opticaster (solar/wind)
- Microgrid Controller for islanded systems
- Cloud-based, monitors hundreds of sites
- Deployed across ERCOT, CAISO, NEM (Australia)
The software moat: Most battery storage competitors sell hardware. Tesla sells hardware + software. Autobidder gives Tesla a recurring revenue stream and data flywheel, every installation makes the AI smarter. At Hornsdale Power Reserve, Autobidder reduced frequency regulation costs by 91% (from $470/MWh to $40/MWh) while providing 100ms response times vs. 6,000ms for traditional gas peakers.
